Boat hire prices in Sydney are hard to compare because every operator bundles differently: some quote per person, some per hour, some per boat with a minimum. Here is how to read a price, what is typically included, and where Capri sits — with the caveat that we can only speak precisely for ourselves.
Self-drive, no licence
Self-drive boats that don’t need a licence are the entry point for most groups. They are capped at 10 knots, seat six to twelve, and are priced per boat. Most no-licence boats on the harbour cost $400–$650 for three hours and carry six to eight. Capri carries eight for $360.
Per person, that is about $45 each with a full boat — less than most people spend on a night out, for three hours on the water.
What is usually included — and what isn’t

The extras to budget for
- Extra hours: $100 each on Capri, up to eight hours in total.
- Bond: $200 on Capri. Most operators hold something similar.
- Insurance excess: $1,000 if there is an accident — standard across hire boats.
- Late return: twice the hourly rate on Capri, because the next group is waiting.
- Rescue call-out: from $100 plus costs if you run out of fuel or run aground.
- Catering: sushi, ice and prosecco pre-booked 48 hours ahead — prices TBC.
- Boat-licence practical training: $149 on Capri, if you want the licence afterwards.
Skippered cruises
Add a skipper and the price rises — you are paying for a professional’s time and often for crew as well. Capacity drops too, because crew take seats. On Capri a skippered cruise is priced on request (from $TBC) and the number of people it carries with crew on board is TBC; ask us for a quote. Bigger crewed boats are a different category again, priced per hour with a minimum charter, and that is where our Friends on the Water listings come in.
Per person or per boat?
Per-boat pricing rewards full boats. Two people on Capri pay $360; eight pay $360. If your group is small and you would rather pay per head, a shared cruise may be cheaper — but you will share the deck. Our take: fill the boat. Eight friends at about $45 each is the best-value three hours on the harbour we know of.
How to compare fairly
- Ask what the hire time includes — does the induction come out of your three hours? Ours doesn’t.
- Ask about fuel, bond and excess in writing.
- Check the wind policy: what counts as too windy, who decides, and whether you get a refund or a credit.
- Count the seats against your group. A six-seat boat for eight people isn’t cheaper.
- Check the departure point and parking — a cheap boat plus a $40 parking fee isn’t cheap.
GST, receipts and paying
Prices on Capri include GST. You pay by card through Stripe when you book and a receipt lands in your inbox straight away — handy for a team day. There is no deposit to chase and no cash on the day, which also means no half-hour at the wharf splitting a bill across six cards. If eight of you are sharing, one person pays and the others send about $45 each; the receipt shows the total.
Our prices, in one place
Everything we charge is on the pricing page, and the booking form shows the live total before you pay. If a number isn’t there, we don’t charge it.
